We are Ditching the generic…
for outrageous, wild, & unconventional bouquets
Hi! We’re Jim & Danny,
Owners and growers of Suburban Stems Cut Flowers— a micro-farm raising sustainable blooms. We are a small operation ‘passion project’ that stands for industry rebellion— here’s why: have you heard of the horror show that is the imported floral industry?
The U.S. consumes 80% of cut flowers world-wide… almost all of which are imported from thousands of miles away. A majority of them are cut by foreign workers who are exploited without guarantee of fair and safe working conditions, and then they are sold here covered in unregulated and unsafe pesticides.
One 2022 study found 201 different chemicals on imported blooms—many detected in florists' bodies and workspaces at toxic levels. Yet we’re still putting them on our kitchen tables, desks, and living rooms like they’re harmless? Aren’t flowers supposed to be good for us and the planet?
That’s where we come in… Blooms with no pesticides, no chemicals, no residue. Raised and sold locally, using ONLY sustainable principles.
We are proud supporters of the ‘Slow Flowers’ movement— whenever possible we use our blooms grown right here in Holbrook, NY— and if we can’t, (i.e., December-February), we source from responsible growers who align with our values and mission.
The Slow Flowers Manifesto
To recognize and respect the seasons by celebrating and designing with flowers when they naturally bloom
To reduce the transportation footprint of the flowers and foliage consumed in the marketplace by sourcing as locally as possible
To support flower farmers small and large by crediting them when possible through proper labeling at the wholesale and consumer level
To encourage sustainable and organic farming practices that respect people and the environment
To eliminate waste and the use of chemical products in the floral industry
To proactively pursue equity, inclusion and representation in the floral marketplace,
Intentionally valuing Black and LGBT+ floral professionals in our business practice with as much support as we give to environmental sustainability
